Daniel Taylor Promoted to Major

Appointment #50

All right folks, three months ago as I'm sure you all know Military Command was extremely concerned with the status of SGU-3. As a result of that concern we placed the whole team on review and told Daniel, who volunteered for the opportunity to get the team back into ship shape, that he had three months to do just that.

The conditions was that for at least one month out of three he had to move SGU-3 out of the Sim Review area for the Sim Strength Rankings (SSRs) and impress his Commander of the Area (CoA) Chris with the strength of the team.

Not only did Daniel succeed, he exceeded our expectations as he managed to get SGU-3 in the healthy range for the SSRs for all three months. In light of this tremendous and wonderful change, Military Command unanimously agrees that SGU-3 is off the review status and will stay open!

Congratulations to the whole team for their hard work in keeping the torch alive.

That's not all folks though. In honor of his dedication, his willingness to step forward and take that torch for SGU-3 Military Command would like to first give Daniel Taylor our appreciation and our admiration. I'm not sure about the other three members, but I personally feared the worst. I am extremely happy and excited that the worst didn't come to pass in this instance and wish to express my gratitude personally.

My personal gratitude isn't the only thing we wish to bestow upon Daniel for his hard work. The first is his elevation to a full Team Leader status within in SGU, making him a permanent leader for this team.

Lastly, after deliberating between each other, Military Command has opted to make an exception to the rule here in regards to promotions. In reality there have only been two special kinds of promotions that have had someone leap frog the rank system. Both individuals were able to do so due to their hard work and dedication to the sim they are assigned to.

Military Command feels that Daniel has shown the same kind of dedication that fits the bill. As such, it is our distinct pleasure and honor to promote Daniel Taylor to the rank of Major with all the rights and privileges that are afforded to the rank effective immediately.

Congratulations Daniel and to SGU-3, it is very well deserved!

SGU Policy on Age of Characters

Restriction of Age to Military Characters in Role-Playing Environments

After gaining the approval of all current role-playing environment leaders Military Command has agreed to construct this policy regarding the restriction of the age any character may play, whether they are rostered and unrostered. It is only with the unanimous decision of all role-playing environment leaders, members of Military Command and the Senate Leader will this policy be approved and implemented.

The following limits will be applied to all characters, no matter their species, military affiliations or genre:

Any individual playing an Enlisted Personnel must play a character over the age of 19.

Any individual playing an Officer must play a character over the age of 22.

The limits placed were decided upon after taking into account the most likely amount of time required for any individual in today’s military to move from signing into the Armed Forces to being completely trained and possibly readiness for active duty. Some latitude was given for possible character development, but only to the extent of flexible realism.

Exceptions for the policy listed herein reside with the discretion of the role-playing environment leader and any individual may approach the leader of their environment with the reasons they believe that an exception may be granted.

Lastly, a Gamemaster is not to be bound by the policy above at any time, allowing them full leverage to create and formulate a simulation for an environment that is both fruitful and enjoyable.

Any violations of this policy will and shall be handled by the role-playing environment leader and will not be under the preview of Military Command or a Commander of the Area. If a player feels that the exception is warranted but their leader does not, there is no option of appealing with someone higher than rank. This declaration is to impress upon every member of Stargate Universe that the rule of the Environment Leader over their domain is absolute; no member higher ranking may insist or demand a change of the rules exacted by that leader as per the instructions of the Guiding Principles.

To further dispense the general content of this policy it is suggested, but not required, that Member Support and all environments Messages Of The Day reflect this information so that new members may be aware of this limitation. In addition, Military Command would request that Member Support find some way to inform any new member that may have been processed after the implementation the content and an explanation of this policy so that they can be fully informed.

Change in Military Command Composition

Appointment #48

Well, this one is a long time overdue and I'll admit that probably my reluctance came down to the simple fact of who it is dealing with. But no more, I'm taking myself by the collar and shaking out the resistance!

Sadly it has become time for Samantha Nelson to leave our happy family. Her reasons for doing so are many and focus on the situation of her life as it stands right now. It's demanding her full attention and as her best friend and Commander I can't hold it against her. This untimely departure has left an opening for a new member to join the Military Command crew and suddenly this appointment goes from sad to glad!

For the last three replacements in the Military Command crew there has been one name at the top of the list each time. She always got the first offer and sadly, until now, she has been unable to join us. Well, that has finally changed! I finally managed to bug her enough about it to get her to say yes! Something that not just myself, but Chris and Ash are both eager for as well.

Anna-Lyn Signey has been with us since the very beginning. I remember the very first time meeting her on SGU-1 when Ryan Williams was still with us. What stuck out to me the most about her wasn't just the fact that her first character, Fox MacGyver, was named after one of my favorite TV characters, but her Tok'ra character. The way she managed to weave together the symbiote/host relationship was really a joy to read.

She didn't truly start to shine though until we put her in charge of SGU-3. SGU-3 had had two previous commanders who, unfortunately, hadn't been able to coax the team into glory. Then in came Anna and not only did the team do well, Anna herself managed to find and train up terrific RPers for taking on the job of TL. Her willingness to step up and help out has been commented on as well, and even though she's quiet and keeps to herself for the most part, many of us in here are ecstatic that she's still here.

So, without further adieu and glad tidings, Anna-Lyn Signey is hereby moved into the Military Command hierarchy, taking the place of second in command due to her current rank as Full Bird Colonel. In addition she will be taking on the position of Commander of the Area for Atlantis Beta Site and I'm sure all the TLs will find her just as inspiring as RPers have on SGU-3 and now Stargate Beta HQ.

Congratulations Anna and welcome aboard (finally!)

Random Travels: USS Independence

We might as well begin at the beginning. One of the first ships created for the whole site, almost four years ago now, this Avenger-class vessel has eight players, currently engaged in a plot involving time travel and altered time lines.

The vessel's CO is Admiral Jeff Price, who is currently missing in game. He is command of a vessel that is designed for scouting operations, with limited weaponry and range but highly agile.

The MOTD gives you a nice picture of the vessel and a fuller page is in development.

I interviewed Alex Verdusco, President of AJJE Games and CO of Independence.

USS Independence was one of the first RPEs for this site. How did the specific concept for the ship come about?

As you may know, SFHQ was a break off club from a larger Star Trek RPG. The club as a whole was designed to provide players with the same type of posting environment, but with a club where COs controlled their own sims, the power of club government was diffused, and a firm set of principles was set in stone. The name I gave the USS Independence and the other 4 first sims were given specific names that embodied the spirit of SFHQ. The Independence was named to show our Independence from the original club, Resolution was named to show we were determined to make this a success, the Khitomer was a nod to a Star Trek incident where a new beginning was forged, and the Crazy Horse was a nod to a cannon Star Trek ship to show we would sim in an honest and true manner.

What do you feel has been Independence’s finest moment so far?

I think probably the finest moment was the completion of our first sim. We were one of the first sims to complete an actual sim in the history of AJJE. We started wobbly with a few posters, but by the end we had a full staff with decent posters. I think at that point I knew everything would be okay with SFHQ, and that we could last as a club.

It has been an interesting four years. Three anchor clubs now, Ride The Edge... But more on Independence. What's it like being a CO, for those who are considering the position?

My position on the Independence is a bit different in the sense that it is a CO/GM spot. And for those that have done that before, it is terribly different then being just a CO. Sometimes it is not as fun... but for me I like it a bit more. I can have my CO character lead the crew down the path that will result in many obstacles. Whereas sometimes a veteran CO would know better then to lead their crew into a GM trap, and be much more cautious. CO spot is perfect for the creative leader. But it takes time and energy, and sometimes patience. Not everyone fits that mold.

What’s been the most enjoyable plot you've done on the ship?

I think my favorite sim... and it's hard to remember the details... was a sim where the crew encountered a telekenetic species living in an asteroid. They were isolationists who dreaded outsiders. I remember it was the first time the crew was able to become action stars, ranging from being thrown against walls, avoiding cave ins, and fighting aliens. I think the bulk of the crew really enjoyed that one...

What are your plans for the future?

That's the million dollar question. I have phased myself out to some degree of SFHQ, because I truly felt I did all I could with the C in C position. However, I think I will remain CO of the Independence from the time being, because I still love to RP even after all these years...

Thanks to Alex for this interview. The next Random Travels ship will be somewhere in LOTW.
